Do you know who you are or what you are capable of? Surprisingly what many of us see as our perceived self is completely different than our real selves. How can we find out our real self versus our perceived self? To learn our true nature requires introspection and an extended analysis of our daily habits. The rosicrucian technique of daily analysis can be a very useful tool for study of the self.

Except we run the day in rewind until we awoke. This same principle can be utilized except instead of giving praise or correction where needed we will merely observe.
Imagine the days events as a movie that plays in your mind. Instead of being the participant you are now the spectator. Watch how you interacted with others. Were you kind, sarcastic, brief? Pay close attention to situations where you thought you were being the you you perceive yourself to be. To improve upon this technique it helps if one periodically imagines themselves outside their body watching their current situation. Unfortunately this technique is not without bias.
*Judge a book by its cover*
Besides our emotional and mental selves there is our physical self. Quite a bit can be learned just from one’s own physical appearance. Stare in a mirror for about 30 minutes. Study your facial features, your eyes, think of what it must be like for others to meet you. Do you have a prominent jaw, maybe you didn’t shave, do you have bad acne? All of these things can hold a part in a perception of our true selves. Another great indicator of what type of person you are is clothing. What clothes do you have on? Do you wear all black? Maybe you wear nothing but Abercrombie and Fitch clothing? Believe it or not people are shallow and they do judge a book by its cover. The clothes you have on can say a lot about you. If one wears all black they will immediately be thrown into a mental category of heavy metal listening, short tempered, gothic, misfit of society, one trying to hard to be unique.
*Look to your friends*
Your friends can sometimes know more about your personality type and who you are more than you do. So ask them what their first impression of you was. What is their impression of you now. This can be hard because sometimes we can keep things from our friends we don’t want them to know. It could be that the tough super hero type one thinks they are is actually a sad lonely over imaginative person. In addition to asking your friends look at your friends. The personalities our friends have often mesh with our own. Likes are attracted to likes, so what qualities do your friends have that you admire? What qualities do they have you hate? Chances are whatever you see in them is in you too.
*Leave your comfort zone*
The best way though to find out who we really are is to do something outside our comfort zone. We all have set routines and behaviors we follow but what extends beyond them? Does the thought of running up to someone and yelling “fuck!” to their face worry you? Maybe you are more intimidated by sky diving. Whatever our worries are can say worlds about who we truly are; and they help to break the glass off our self perceived self.
No matter what your nature, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that we know who we are and what we are truly capable of. When we know this our confidence is increased because we know ourselves. There is nothing as empowering as knowing one’s self. When you know yourself you can change yourself; if you don’t like things about who you are then change them. We are in control of our actions, behaviors, and appearances; so we need to use them to our advantage and not be subject to our self perceptions.
